How we choose a star to name. How you can choose a suitable constellation, so your chosen star is visible on significant dates.
It’s been more than 23 centuries since the first known star catalogue was compiled by Timocharis of Alexandria. The most comprehensive catalogue ever compiled is the photometric sky survey produced in 1983 as a guide for the Hubble Space Telescope. The survey identified some 16 million stars and it is from this that ISR selects stars for you to name.
Facts about stars. How stars are formed. Why stars shine. How to tell their age. And how far away stars are.
The International Star Registry is the world's first star naming service - launched in 1979 as an unusual gift idea which enables you to express your sentiments towards someone. Since that time we have named over one million stars worldwide for celebrities, dignitaries and loved ones.
